What can a WWII-era tank teach us about design? What does a small, blue flower tell us about audiences? What do drunk, French marathon-runners show us about software? In 40+ chapters and stories, you will learn the ways in which UX has influenced history and vice versa, and how it continues to change our daily lives. This book enables you to participate fully in discussions about UX, as you discover the fundamentals of user experience design and research. Rather than grasp concepts through a barrage of facts and figures, you will learn through stories. Poisonous blowfish, Russian playwrights, tiny angels, Texas sharpshooters, and wilderness wildfires all make an appearance. From Chinese rail workers to UFOs, you will cover a lot of territory, because the experiences that surround you are as broad and varied as every age, culture, and occupation. You will start by covering the principles of UX before going into more diverse topics, including: being human, the art of persuasion, and the murky waters of process. Every day, people gather around conference tables, jump onto phone calls, draw on whiteboards, stare at computer monitors, and try to build things - we all create. Increasingly, what we create is something digital. From apps to web sites, and from emails to video games, often the sole evidence of an experience appears on an illuminated screen. We design tiny worlds that thrive or perish at the whim of a device's on/off button. With this book you will be ready. What You'll LearnMaster the fundamentals of UX Acquire the skills to participate intelligently in discussions about UX design and researchUnderstand how UX impacts business, including product, pricing, placement, and promotion as well as security, speed, and privacyWho This Book Is For Professionals who work alongside UX designers and researchers, including but not limited to: project managers, graphic designers, copyeditors, developers, and human resource professionals; and business, marketing, and computer science students seeking to understand how UX affects human cognition and memory, product pricing and promotion, and software security and privacy.

Product Placement in Hollywood and Egyptian Films

Products have been placed in films since the appearance of Sunlight soap in a 1896 film. However, in-film placement has started to gain much traction in recent decades due to technological advances, such as the internet, Digital Video Recorders, and over-the-top providers that have been lessening the impact of traditional marketing. Product placement expenses in the American media have risen from $190 million in 1974 to around $3.5 billion in 2004 (Lehu, 2007). The practice is also existent in major regional film centers such as Bollywood, Korea, and Egypt. This study examined the in-film placement trends in Hollywood and Egypt through a quantitative content analysis of the top earning films between 2010 and 2013. Results show that the average number of placements was 35.30 and 27.65 per Hollywood and Egyptian films respectively. The practice was aligned in both in terms of modality, product category, scene setting, and character association.

Get in the Game

As video games have become more popular as a medium, their viability as an advertising platform has increased, not least as a result of their ability to reach vast and very specific audiences with prolonged and repeated exposure of the messages. While many successful examples of in-game advertising and product placement have been achieved, the authors of this book felt that this field had not been explored adequately, and that a more structured approach would be beneficial to both game developers and advertisers. Through a survey of existing academic research, focus group interviews and netnography studies, the authors sought knowledge with which to develop a model to consistently develop successful in-game advertising, which can be found in this book. The findings within this book will have value for video game developers, advertising and marketing professionals, students of either field, and people with an interest in either subject.

Consumers are exposed to thousands of marketing messages every day. In such a cluttered environment, gaining consumers attention becomes increasingly difficult. Overwhelmed by a wealth of information, consumers process much of the visual input only preattentively. The focus of this book is on early visual attention. Specifically, a biologically plausible model of early visual attention is introduced from computational neuroscience. The model's algorithm analyzes the physical characteristics of objects in a visual scene to determine which items are most salient and therefore most likely to attract consumers' early attention. The utility of the model for marketing theory and practice is demonstrated in an online advertising context. Further marketing applications of the model, including print media design, website optimization, video game advertising, and product placement, are discussed.
