Every summer more than 130,000 comic fans, gamers, cosplay enthusiasts, and nerds of all stripes descend on San Diego to mingle with the top entertainment celebrities and creative-industry professionals in an unprecedented celebration of popular culture in all its forms. From humble beginnings, Comic-Con has mutated into an electrifying, exhausting galaxy of movies, TV, video games, art, fashion, toys, merchandise, and buzz. It's where the future of entertainment unspools in real time, and everyone wants to be there. In Comic-Con and the Business of Pop Culture, author Rob Salkowitz, a recognized expert in digital media and the global digital generation (and an unabashed comics enthusiast), explores how the humble art form of comics ended up at the center of the 21st-century media universe. From Comic-Con's massive exhibit hall and panels to its exclusive parties and business suites, Salkowitz peels back the layers to show how comics culture is influencing communications, entertainment, digital technology, marketing, education, and storytelling. Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 2,0, University of Applied Sciences Köln RFH, language: English, abstract: The classical way music artists have to go to become successful is to convince the guard of a music label to get a chance to convince millions of people with their music afterwards. The labels then contrive a marketing-strategy for the new artists and arrange live-concerts in front of small audiences, which are a good medium to give the world a first impression of the artists talent and style of music. In the era of web 2.01,the way goes the other way around: Through social media they can create their music career vast on their own and can profile themselves. Uploading a music video, e.g. on YouTube, and convincing millions of people can be the key to call the labels attention to the unknown artists. The music labels work has also changed: Scouts search for talents on social media platforms. On the basis of users feedback, they can analyse, whose music runs and so which artists they want to contract. But often the labels look for artists, who are really talented and already have a self-marketing-strategy.2 That shows some kind of a new era in the social media, because during the last years, the term social media marketing was formed and operated. In the first period, after the entrance in the web 2.0, people didn¿t know about the spheres and possbilities of social media. Using it as a marketing tool has opened new gates for musicians to create the first buzz. The following explanations demonstrate the effectiveness of marketing in social media on the basis of the world¿s largest social platforms, Facebook and YouTube. Additionally, two cases of successful self-marketing through social media are exemplified in the end: the story of success of Justin Bieber and Lana Del Rey. Their appearance on Facebook and YouTube will be analyzed with the help of numbers and figures.

2015 Susanne K. Langer Award for Outstanding Scholarship, Media Ecology Association 2013 Book of the Year, Visual Communication Division, National Communication Association Amidst the profound upheavals in technology, economics, and culture that mark the contemporary moment, marketing strategies have multiplied, as brand messages creep ever deeper into our private lives. In Your Ad Here, an engaging and timely new book, Michael Serazio investigates the rise of 'guerrilla marketing” as a way of understanding increasingly covert and interactive flows of commercial persuasion. Digging through a decade of trade press coverage and interviewing dozens of agency CEOs, brand managers, and creative directors, Serazio illuminates a diverse and fascinating set of campaign examples: from the America's Army video game to Pabst Blue Ribbon's 'hipster hijack,” from buzz agent bloggers and tweeters to The Dark Knight's 'Why So Serious?” social labyrinth. Blending rigorous analysis with eye-opening reporting and lively prose, Your Ad Here reveals the changing ways that commercial culture is produced today. Serazio goes behind-the-scenes with symbolic creators to appreciate the professional logic informing their work, while giving readers a glimpse into this new breed of 'hidden persuaders” optimized for 21st-century media content, social patterns, and digital platforms. Ultimately, this new form of marketing adds up to a subtle, sophisticated orchestration of consumer conduct and heralds a world of advertising that pretends to have nothing to sell.
